Nicki is more than just a rapperAlthough the music industry needed to fill a void when it came to representation for female rappers, Nicki Minaj is not exactly wanting to be considered "just" a rapper, she is trying to reach a wider audience with her music. Some in the hip hop community do not feel she is a good representation of the history of rap.
Why? mainly because Nicki's style is
too commercial. Her last two albums Pink Friday and Roman Reloaded had mostly dance and pop songs on them, which received much criticism from those who felt she should of had more hard core lyrics.
Nicki's music and style can not be definedIt is clear that Nicki does not want to be defined or stereotyped into a specific music genre, she is experimenting with all types of sounds, beats and music. As can be seen in her colorful and fun music videos. Interestingly enough Nicki Minaj's fan base are really young starting at 5 yrs old and upwards. This could explain Nicki's choice of colorful hairstyles, bright girly outfits and animated facial expressions.
Can Nicki redeem herself with the Re-Up album? At the same time I can see that the songstress wants to contribute to the hip hop era with her latest album: Roman Reloaded the Re-up which is featuring many of the well known rappers in the industry. It may not be enough to convince the critics of the rap world that she is authentic but at least she is trying.
